Step Ladder Tutoring Program has tutored seventh and eighth grade students for Central and Wethersfield schools for the past 13 years. They have had 79 volunteer tutors over the years and assisted 223 students with homework help, projects and test preparation.

The nonprofit organization also provide the students with snacks at each session, free books and school supplies throughout the year as well as a summer session during the month of July at the Kewanee Public Library. Students can participate in the program for a total of two-school years and three-summer sessions.

The goal of the Step Ladder Tutoring Program is to help middle school students become more responsible for their own education and improve their attitude toward school and learning.

Etta LaFlora, executive director of Sunshine Community Services Center said, “The schools have done a great job in working with us as we assist students in our program. We try to encourage students by reminding them how their future is in their hands, and how they can make the necessary changes to have a better life for themselves.”
