Becky Simon, the League of Women Voters of Illinois state president, will attend a gathering in Kewanee on Wednesday, April 22.

The meeting, which will be open to the public, will be hosted by the LWV of the Kewanee Area at Country Morning Coffee from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

Baked goods from Country Morning Coffee and refreshments will be provided. Also, people may bring their own food and drinks.

Country Morning Coffee will be open until 4:45 p.m. that day so that people can buy baked goods, drinks and coffee bags.

There will be a social time followed by a discussion with Simon. Current and upcoming activities and meetings of all three levels of the League of Women Voters (local, state and national) will be covered. Also, questions can be asked.

Two of the pillars of LWVIL are Empowering Voters and Defending Democracy. Some of the areas of concern are voting rights and election laws, constitutional rights, public education, basic human needs (food, housing, healthcare), climate and the environment, and immigration rights and protections.

In the past, LWVUS and LWVIL have filed lawsuits in some of these areas and won.

Candidate forums are conducted by the state and local leagues.  However, they do not endorse any candidates.

The League of Women Voters, a non-partisan political organization, encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government, and works to increase the understanding of major public policy issues and to influence public policy through education and advocacy.

Those interested in joining the League of Women Voters or want more information may contact President Carla Hillman at 309-852-5215 or lwvkewanee@gmail.com or go to the websites www.lwv.org for the national league and www.lwvil.org for the state league.  The local league also has a Facebook page.
