The Kewanee Fire Department was dispatched at 5:12 p.m. Tuesday to a possible chimney fire in the 400 block of West Division Street.
According to a news release from the fire department, smoke was noted upon arrival coming from a small vent above an attached garage.
Firefighters encountered smoky conditions in the garage and the adjoining room of the home, where the fireplace was located. A small fire was found and quickly extinguished above the ceiling next to the chimney.
All occupants were able to exit the structure unharmed.
Minor damage was noted to the structure with the majority of the damage being located in and around the chimney. The occupants were able to re-enter the residence after the fire was extinguished.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but is believed to be the result of radiant heat from the chimney igniting the surrounding material.
Eight Kewanee firefighters were on scene for approximately an hour to extinguish the fire and ventilate the smoke out of the residence.
“Kewanee Community Fire Protection District also responded for automatic aid, and their service is greatly appreciated,” Fire Chief Stephen Welgat said.

Due to a structure fire in the 400 block of West Division, the fire department had to open up a hydrant. This may cause low water pressure and/or rusty water in the area.
The water will clear up as the system settles. Remember to run cold water until it runs clear as to not being sediments into water heaters.
