Annawan/Wethersfield junior Karson Shrum and Ridgewood senior Fernando Avila-Rubio advanced to Saturday’s IHSA Boys Class 1A State Cross Country meet.

Shrum recorded an eighth place finish in a time of 16:56.41 at Saturday’s Oregon Sectional meet and Avila-Rubio placed 22nd in a time of 17:27.83.

The first 10 individual runners (not on an advancing team) qualify to compete at the state championship meet at Detweiller Park in Peoria.

Nicolai Martino of Winnebago was the overall winner in the boys race with a time of 16:04.14. Rockford (Christian) won the boys team event with a low of 80 points and A/W was 11th with 282 points.

Shrum improved on last year’s sectional meet performance where he placed 41st in a time 18:11.40.

Other A/W runners were Noah Feltner (52nd in a time of 18:19.98), Cash Verstraete (61st at 18:43.19), Logan Davis (85th at 19:20.12), Matthew Ponce (115th at 21:06.73), Daylon Hendrix (116th at 21:06.73) and Lucas Fehlberg (136th at 22:48.71).

The Class 1A boys race will start at 10 a.m. at Detweiller Park in Peoria.
