The first annual Kewanee Pride Festival, organized by the Kewanee Commission on Human Relations, was held Saturday, June 10 at Northeast Park, and the community turned out in support. Local businesses and organizations, including food vendors, set up booths, offering free giveaways, information and food for the hungry festivalgoers.
Kewanee Mayor Gary Moore provided remarks before the festivities began and thanked everyone who showed up to celebrate the “lives of the many beautiful people.” The mayor also spoke about love, understanding and acceptance, and recited a few Bible quotes he found appropriate for the day’s event.
Kewanee Commission on Human Relations Board Chair Taurean Bond acknowledged the hard work of his fellow committee members Sarah Hughes and August Wolf. He thanked everyone who came out to celebrate Pride, reminding the crowd that “love does win.”
“Enjoy the show, kick back and enjoy each others’ company,” he told the attendees.
Performers that day included “Dot the Storyteller,” who entertained the crowd with songs and stories, and drag performers from the Quad City area. High Jinx, a local rock band, also performed for the crowd.
The daytime portion of the festival went on from noon to 6 pm. Later, people were invited to attend the After Party that began at 8:30 pm at the Chrome Gypsy Compound.
