The annual Kewanee Park District Easter Egg Hunt is set for Saturday, April 12 at Windmont Park and the park district’s director, Andrew Dwyer, said that when it comes to spring weather, it’s difficult to predict what it will be.
“We’re hoping for not last year,” Dwyer said, recalling the cold temperatures and wind.
Optimally he would love to see the weather for the annual Easter Egg event be somewhere between 55 and 60 degrees so that families can enjoy themselves. The long-range forecast looks good, he said.
“It’s supposed to be in the high 50s or low 60s,” he said.
In the past, the weather has run the gamut of being sunny and mild to frigid enough to require egg hunters to wear winter coats and hats.
Dwyer said with Easter coming a little later in the calendar this year, the chance of nicer weather is good.
This year, participants will also have more room to hunt eggs, said Dwyer.
“We’re looking at revamping some of the locations for younger kids, moving out to the pickleball and basketball court.”
Dwyer said he believes that by extending the search area, it will take a little longer for kids to collect the eggs and add to their fun.
It’s not just about collecting eggs to trade for treats either. The organizers are hoping for a more immersive experience and have invited area organizations to participate through offering a craft, prizes or activity for the kids.
So far, the Methodist Church, the Hill Church and Abilities Plus Early Intervention Program have signed up to participate, but Dwyer said they are always looking for more groups.
“We accept and host any organization who wants to be there and have a little prize or craft,” he said.
As in years past, the Easter Bunny will make an appearance and people are welcome to get their photos taken with him.
The hunt starts at 10 a.m. with age groups of birth-2 years, 3-4 year olds, 5-6 year olds, 7-8 year olds and 9-10 year olds.
And just in case the weather doesn’t cooperate, the rain date is set for the following Saturday, April 19.
