It was an evening straight out of the 1920s.
Ladies dressed as flappers. Gentlemen wearing bowler hats and vests. Prohibition-era cocktails. A band playing songs like “Sweet Sue.”
The Kewanee Schools Foundation hosted “An Evening with the Great Gatsby” at Midland Country Club.

The event was a fundraiser for the foundation, and featured a special proceeding: The unveiling of artwork for the outdoor fitness court which will be built across Third Street from Kewanee High School — in part, with financial support from the schools foundation.

Kewanee School Supt. Rebecca Baney and Lori Christiansen, president of the Kewanee Schools Foundation, pulled the veil from a depiction of the artwork.
The work, created by retired Kewanee High School art teacher Sue Blake, features butterflies and flowers. The actual artwork for the fitness court will be 32 by 7 feet.
Jeff Johnson, executive director of the foundation, said Sunday night’s event also celebrated the 35th anniversary of the creation of the foundation.
He thanked the audience, which included many donors and supports of the foundation, for their “tremendous support.”
