The Community Day at the Pool, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Kewanee, will be rescheduled after the pool was closed and required sanitization due to a fecal “accident.”
The incident occurred just about one hour after the pool opened for business on Saturday. The pool was immediately shut down and workers began the process of sanitization. The process involved dumping about 80 lbs of chemicals into the pool, said Parks Executive Director Andrew Dwyer.
“It rights itself in about 13 hours,” he said.
On Saturday, the park district then announced that the Rotary Club and the Kewanee Park District Community Day at the Pool, scheduled for that day, would need to be postponed.
The pool reopened on Sunday for normal hours. No other events will need to be rescheduled, including the Kewanee Police Department’s National Night Out scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 1 from 5 to 9 pm.
This is the third time this year that the pool has required sanitization due to a fecal accident, according to Dwyer. That number exceeded last year’s incidents, but it’s part of doing business, he said.
Dwyer is still awaiting word from the Rotary Club about the new date for the Community Day in the Pool. He will notify the public as soon as he learns. But time is growing short.
The pool is scheduled to close down for the season on Sunday, Aug. 6. Hours for residents to swim on the last day will be from noon to 3 pm. The popular “Doggy Swim” will be held from 3-6 pm.
