While Kewanee residents work to clear away the debris left from a Sunday night storm that blew through town, another wave of storms is on its way for Monday afternoon and evening.

Weather officials are reporting a round of possibly severe thunderstorms, especially this evening. The Weather Channel predicts the strong storms could start around 8 p.m. The storms are expected to bring more damaging winds and possibly large hail. Nearly an inch of rainfall is expected with this storm.

The storm prediction center for the National Weather Service is forecasting an enhanced risk level of 3 out of 5 with damaging winds the primary threat, and possible tornadoes, large hail and torrential rainfall possible.

The storms are expected to develop due to an unstable atmosphere today as they approach Iowa. Supercell thunderstorms with tornadoes would initially be most likely in areas north of Interstate 80, followed by damaging winds producing a line of storms that will move west to east towards early evening.

Wind gusts over 75 mph possible and the storm is a fast-moving one, heading east at 60 mph. Storms are expected to be more widespread later in the evening before sinking south through Missouri and Central Illinois. Heavy rain will then become a primary threat. A heat advisory is also in effect until 8 p.m.

The storm that swept through the Kewanee area Sunday evening brought high winds and rain that brought down branches and even some trees. Many residents’ reported that their power flickered and went out momentarily before being restored, although dozens of residents in the area lost power, according to the Ameren Outage Center.

For residents with downed branches, the city offers bulk brush stickers, which can be purchased and used for bundled branches that have been cut down to size. The stickers are $5 for small piles and $10 for larger-sized piles. For more information about brush collection guidelines, click here.

Landscape waste stickers are also an option for residents who wish to place their brush in landscape waste bags and set them on the curb for pickup.
