My name is Greg Christakos. I hope to be able to be a periodic contributor to The Kewanee Voice. In the column that for a lack of a better name, will be called Reflections of a Baby Boomer, I hope to reflect and comment on matters that affect the readers of The Kewanee Voice.
What is presented in the column will be mostly things of a local nature however, I will also comment on items concerning our state, country and our world. The purposes of the column include recognizing those individuals that have done good things in our local communities, getting you to think about that which affects our daily lives and hopefully entertaining you.
I am going to attempt to not be controversial but it would be difficult to write a column of this nature without touching on controversial topics from time to time. I don’t expect the readers to agree with everything I offer but I do hope to offer you some food for thought.
To begin, I don’t know about you but…
I am very thankful to those responsible for making The Kewanee Voice a viable way of getting local information to the public. Ever since the local newspaper quit being a local newspaper I have found it very difficult to stay informed about what is happening in our area. The Kewanee Voice has helped fill that void.
I don’t know about you but…
Being of an older generation I found it a difficult transition in getting my news online instead of from reading a newspaper. I am happy to say that I have made the transition. I currently have three newspapers from various larger markets sent to my email. I also look at the offerings of The Kewanee Voice on a regular basis. This has helped me stay informed on matters that I consider important.
I don’t know about you but…
I am also happy that the local radio station has done such a great job keeping residents of the Tri-County area up to date and informed about what is going on in our region, especially with their wake up Tri-Counties morning show. Sean Kernan and the people of WKEI and RegionalMedianews.com are outstanding and are a wonderful asset to our communities.
I don’t know about you but…
Whoever came up with the idea of having local high school students contribute articles about what is happening in their schools should be commended. This symbiotic relationship helps both the students, in learning a lifelong skill, and the readers, in staying informed. Thanks to Rebecca Bainey and Jacob Doan at KHS and Amanda Frank at WHS for their efforts in this area.
I don’t know about you but…
I think that we need to give all the recognition possible to the youngsters of our local school districts that are accomplishing great things. So often the focus is on the negative done by our youth instead of the good.
I don’t know about you but…
I think it is probably time to end my first offering. I also think any afternoon is a great time to take a nap. I just might do that.
