In the evening of Easter Sunday, Henry County was the scene of at least three violent storms that damaged buildings and trees.

Two of the storms, west of Geneseo and south of Atkinson, were classified by the National Weather Service as tornadoes. They destroyed buildings and damaged trees. 

The third storm, which caused significant damage to buildings and trees in the Galva area, wasn’t categorized as a tornado but as a derecho.

No injuries were reported from any of the storms.

The weather service released reports on the Atkinson and Geneseo tornadoes giving details of the storms’ paths and the damage they caused.

The Atkinson storm was the strongest, categorized as EF-1 by the the weather service. Tornadoes are classified anywhere from EF-U to EF-5, with EF-5 being the strongest and most damaging.

The Atkinson tornado first touched down just before 9 p.m. near Illinois Route 81 west of the Galva-Atkinson Blacktop and proceeded north for 7.3 miles, stopping just short of the village of Atkinson.

According to the weather service, this storm was the most powerful to hit the county, with winds peaking at 95 mph.

The storm hit “Multiple farmsteads with significant tree damage, including snapping of white pines, and one farmstead with an outbuilding destroyed,” the weather service reported.

The other tornado, rated EF-0, touched down at the same time as the Atkinson funnel cloud a couple of miles south of Interstate 80 and west of Geneseo. It proceeded north for 5.9 miles.

“A tornado debris signature was seen on doppler radar up to 2,900 feet,” according to the weather service. “However, very little damage was found besides small branches.”

Both the Atkinson and Geneseo tornadoes had maximum widths of 25 yards.

Earlier Sunday evening, an EF-0 tornado with a peak wind speed of 85 mph was reported in New Boston, on the Mississippi River in western Mercer County.

That tornado uprooted a large tree and damaged a small outbuilding.
