No charges have been filed in connection with a bullet being found on a Kewanee school bus last week, police said Tuesday.

According to a news release issued Tuesday by Police Chief Steve Kijanowski, on Friday “a single .32 caliber round was discovered on a school bus” by Kewanee School District staff.

The chief said police and school personnel began an investigation into the matter, and school staff learned that a “young juvenile” had been showing ammunition to other students prior to the discovery of the round on the school bus.

The investigation led officers to a residence in Kewanee, Chief Kijanowski reported, where a young juvenile was believed to have brought the round onto the bus. With the family’s consent, officers searched the juvenile’s backpack and found a 9mm round.

Further investigation, the news release said, uncovered a mixed bag of ammunition in the basement of the residence, containing various calibers, including .32 caliber rounds matching the manufacturer of the ammunition found on the school bus.

“The resident of the home cooperated fully with law enforcement and agreed to secure the ammunition in a locked area along with their firearms to ensure safety,” according to the news release. No firearms were found in the juvenile’s possession or brought to school at any time during the incident, the release said.

“KPD commends the student who provided the information that led to the identification of the young juvenile and emphasizes the importance of vigilance in maintaining school safety,” Chief Kijanowski wrote in the news release. “The Kewanee Police Department continues to work closely with KCUSD 229 to ensure the well-being of all students and staff.”

No charges have been filed at this time and the incident will be reviewed by the Henry County State’s Attorneys Office.
