While last year’s Kewanee Hispanic Heritage Celebration organziers battled the wind, this year’s weather was near perfect as people turned out for the annual block party event on Saturday, Sept. 27.

The event, presented by the Kewanee Commission on Human Relations, featured vendors and live entertainment and took up two city blocks on Third Street.

The party started at 4 p.m. with music by DJ Tony Beats and continued on through 11 p.m. Other activities included the presentation of the event’s first recognition award given to Dr Michael Ahearn as the first 2025 Orgullo Hispano de Kewanee for his services and dedication to the Hispanic community. There was also a traditional dance presentation, a photo booth and traditional Mexican music and food.

Human Relations Commission member Jessica Fornander thanked the community and said about this year’s event, “Muchísimas gracias Kewanee! Best year yet. Be on the lookout for events throughout the year. All the smiles and families we saw Saturday is why we do it. At one point the kids were playing soccer. I love that so many came to support our event. It was a great recognition for the Hispanic community in Kewanee. Viva Kewanee!”
