The Garden Club of Kewanee will resume its “Yard of the Month” contest starting in June. Club members are already combing the town looking for the future recipients with the criteria of an appealing, inviting landscape with a variety of colors and texture.

Now that the winter months are behind us, homeowners have begun to turn their attention outdoors and many are working to get their yards and gardens back into shape. In years past, the Garden Club hasn’t asked for help in choosing their nominees. Instead, committee members have driven around the town and taken note of yards that could be contenders.

But the club’s past president, Joline Oswald, said the task of finding yards year after year has grown more difficult, so the club is now reaching out to the public for help.

The committee is asking for tips from local residents about which Kewanee yards and gardens are prize-worthy. Oswald said that nominations for “Yard of the Month” can be made by phoning (309) 333-1114 and leaving a message with the address of the property that the tipster thinks is amazing and worthy of the title.

“The committee will take it from there,” said Oswald.

“Yard of the Month” winners will receive a sign to post in their yard throughout the month, along with a certificate and a gift certificate to a local nursery. They will also be featured in an article on The Kewanee Voice.

Yards are chosen for June, July and August.

Last year’s winners were Julia and Keith Bridgewater, Peggy and Kerry Gish and Linda Finin.
