During the four-day Hog Days weekend, you can find all kinds of food in Kewanee.

From the traditional grilled pork chops to the egg rolls, Mexican dishes, Italian sausage and other fare offered along the Hog Days midway, festival-goers can satisfy practically any taste in food.

And if it’s a traditional breakfast you’re looking for, head out Midland Road to the Kewanee Municipal Airport for the annual pancake and sausage breakfast.

Airports throughout America often have “fly-in” breakfasts as special events. But you don’t have to fly to the airport for the Monday breakfast; members of Wethersfield High School’s Key Club and Builders Club will be directing traffic and helping people find places to park.

While the history of a Labor Day breakfast at the airport goes back to 1969, there have been several local organizations that put on the breakfast.

For the past several years, the Kewanee Community Fire Department has sponsored the breakfast.

Ellis Ericson of the fire department, which serves the rural areas surrounding Kewanee, said the Labor Day breakfast remains a popular destination for Hog Days participants.

Each year, pancakes and sausage are served to 1,000 to 1,100 diners in the four hours (7-11 a.m.) the breakfast is held. Last year, there were the most planes in at least the last 10 years, Ericson said.

The fact that the annual Stearman Fly-In will be taking place at the airport in Galesburg on the same day helps boost the number of pilot participants in the breakfast. (The Stearman biplanes will come to the airport in large numbers on Wednesday, when the Galesburg event sponsors a flight to Kewanee.)
