The 29th annual Swedish Stomp, arranged by the Bishop Hill Old Settlers’ Association, brought in 101 runners for the September 25 5K walk/run event. Clear skies and warm breezes greeted the contestants as they enjoyed the course that took them in and around the historic village.

The overall winner in the men’s division was Miles Taylor of Cambridge with a run time of 0:18:12. Allison Kopp of Osco took home first-place honors in the women’s division by finishing the course with a time of 0:23:25. Each received the coveted hand carved boot trophy by DLH Woodwork.

Runners of all ages joined in the fun, with T-shirts for teens and adults. A special “Skamparoo” allows those six and under to enjoy some competition. All runners were treated to a special meal following the run. Before the race, onlookers took advantage of a separate breakfast, helping them to cheer energetically as the runners and walkers headed toward the finish line.

To add to the day, four members of the Bishop Hill Fire Department arrived, each wearing their heavy gear. The foursome walked the course and made it to the end, a bit hot, but in great shape.

The Stomp draws contestants from towns and cities all around Bishop Hill. Many are returning runners, and family members join together to make it a memorable day.

The Old Settlers’ Association is the oldest organization in the Village of Bishop Hill. Profits from such things as the Stomp help the group maintain the 1861 Colony School, which is used by many as a meeting place for community and family functions.
