In spite of the cooler temps, residents returned to the Oasis Family Aquatic Center Wednesday after the Illinois Department of Public Health closed down the facility earlier this week.

Executive Director of Parks Andrew Dwyer said the issue of licensing had been worked out on Tuesday and announced the reopening of the pool on social media.

On Monday, an inspector for the IDPH shut down the pool after questions arose on whether the facility had a license to operate. Dwyer said he mailed off the application in April, two weeks before the due date and believed the license was in good standing.

To make matters worse, the inspector misspoke when he told Dwyer that a state rule required minors under the age of 16 to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Dwyer told the staff to comply with the order to shut down the pool, but said he later researched the rule and found that it only pertained to pools with no lifeguards on duty. The Kewanee Park District employs multiple lifeguards.

On Tuesday, Dwyer said he received an email from officials stating that IDPH had received all of the necessary documents and was waiting on the inspector to approve the application, which he did later that day.

The park reopened for business at noon on Wednesday. The pool is open seven days a week from noon to 6 pm, weather permitting.
