Ball games at Northeast Park are resuming tonight after the very bored Parks Director Andrew Dwyer made a decision.
“I asked what I could do to help the community,” said Dwyer.
The answer, he thought, would be to try to help return normalcy to Northeast Park, the one Kewanee park that suffered the least amount damage when a tornado hit the city on Monday.
Since the storm, the park district office, located at Baker Park, has been without phones, power or internet. He and his staff were sitting around feeling restless, he said. Dwyer said they came up with the idea to join their maintenance team that has been hard at work to repair the parks.
Northeast Park is the one park that has been open since Tuesday. The Oasis swimming pool has been open as well. But Dwyer made the decision on Tuesday to cancel the ball games held at the park’s diamonds, since the maintenance workers were stretched thin and working at other parks.
Now that the diamonds have been dragged by Dwyer himself, the director is announcing that tonight’s boys ball games are back on, with the first pitch at 5:15 p.m.
Dwyer said that Windmont Park, Chautauqua Park and Baker Park are still closed to the public, but he is hoping that once power is restored to the 19th Hole restaurant, he can announce the reopening.
Dwyer is also asking for help to clean up Baker Park Golf Course and made an announcement on social media requesting volunteers to meet on Thursday, July 18, at 9 a.m. at the park district office. Those wishing to volunteer should bring gloves and a rake.
Also, Dwyer is warning people away from Windmont Park, as there are still downed wires and it’s not safe for residents, he said.
