When the city of Galva announced earlier this year that a prime downtown location would be available for a year — free of charge — to a new business, it seemed like a great opportunity.
But Cole McDaniel said that while there was some interest in the offer, the city didn’t receive any applications.

McDaniel is the president of Hometown Consulting of Peoria, which is working with the City of Galva and the Galva Economic Development Committee on the project.
Earlier this year, the city announced that the owner of Crescent City Tap on Front Street is willing to offer a large room next door to the tavern for development of a new business. The offer includes a year of basically free operation — no rent, utility costs, phone or Internet costs. And the city will even pick up the city’s trash for free for a year.
The value of the offer is “well over $25,000,” McDaniel said.
“We had some traction, and a tremendous amount of visits” to the site, McDaniel said. But in the end, no applications were received.
The plan had been to announce the winner of the business site at Galva’s Fourth of July celebration, but that didn’t happen.
McDaniel said the deadline to apply for the business opportunity has been moved back to Aug. 19, which will give prospective business operators time to put together a business plan for how they would use the building space.
In the meantime, the city and Hometown Consulting will work to create interest in the business opportunity. The effort might include an open house at the building.
Local officials in Galva are determined to make the program work, McDaniel said.
“Everybody is really on board with it,” he said.
