Kewanee High School will get a new auditorium and two new classrooms, following action Tuesday by the Kewanee School Board.

The board accepted the bid of $1.9 million from Precision Builders for an addition to the east side of the school.

“This has been a concept for quite a while now,” said school board President Jeff Johnson.

The addition will feature an auditorium that will seat about 100 people — much smaller than the school’s Petersen Auditorium.

Johnson said that facility will be more suitable for things like small theater presentations, FFA speaking contests and so forth.

One of the classrooms is intended to be used for science classes. And Supt. Rebecca Baney said one of the rooms could be for a Certified Nurse Assistant training program envisioned for the school.

Baney said the addition won’t require any increase in taxes. “You already have the money,” she told the board.

Funds from a working-cash bond issue the school recently made, as well as state grant funds, will cover the cost of the addition, she said.

She said she was “very pleased” with the bid from Precision Builders, as she had expected the cost of the project to be higher.

The board also accepted a bid for $220,710 for new Chromebook laptop computers for high school students.

Baney said the new computers will replace older ones that can’t run the newest software the school will be using.
