The new Dollar General store under construction on North Main Street.

Kewanee’s new Dollar General store is quickly taking shape at the northeast corner of Sixth and Main streets.

The company will close its Midland Plaza location and move to the new store.

City Manager Gary Bradley said plans for the store that company officials provided to the city show the new building will be 9,100 square feet. The company earlier received zoning variances from the city allowing a waiver of the setback requirements to adjoining properties, and fewer parking spaces than city ordinances specify.

Bradley said Dollar General’s people had told city officials that they were looking for a site for a new store on the north side of Kewanee.

A garage-style building on the corner, and an adjoining house, were demolished to make room for the new store.

According to the company website, Dollar General operates more than 9,000 stores in 47 states.

Company officials did not respond to a request for comment from The Kewanee Voice.
