Several law-enforcement agencies are investigating the death of a man whose body was found Sunday night on the railroad tracks in Kewanee.

At about 8 p.m. Sunday, Kewanee police responded to an incident involving an Amtrak train that struck an individual lying on the tracks just north of Cernovich’s Scrap Yard, 616 E. Sixth St. 

“Officers began an investigation and located identification and other personal items belonging to the deceased individual, a 40-year-old male,” according to a news release from Police Chief Stephen Kijanowski. 

“At this time, the Kewanee Police Department is withholding the release of the individual’s identity pending positive confirmation of their identity,” the release said. It added that police are “actively working with the Henry County Coroner’s Office to ensure all proper identification processes are completed.”

The Kewanee Police Department was assisted in this investigation by the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, the Henry County Coroner’s Office and the Amtrak Police Department.
