On Saturday, KHS’s boys and girls track teams competed in the 17th annual Silver Streak Last Chance Indoor Meet at Monmouth College.

Twenty schools from 1A, 2A and 3A entered their top two competitors in each event. Top scorers will move on to the indoor state competition for track and field.

By the end of the competition, Kewanee’s boys team ended in fifth place with 52 points, and the Kewanee girls came in ninth place with 22.5 points. The boys team from Bartonville seized the day with 77 points, with East Moline – United (72 points) and Geneseo (56.5 points) next in line. Quincy’s girls team took home first place with 96 points, followed by Dunlap (89 points) and Galesburg (60 points).

Though neither Kewanee team eclipsed the competition, speed and success did come the Boilers’ way. Senior Prestin Stabler ended in sixth place for the 60-meter dash (7.30 seconds) and third for the 400-meter dash (54.82 seconds). Freshman Chris Crowe was close behind Stabler in the 400 meter, crossing the finish line at 55.75 seconds for sixth place.

Speed also favored Anthony Padilla. The junior ended fourth in the 60-meter hurdles at 8.88 seconds and earned a spot at the indoor state competition for track and field, which will be hosted at Illinois Wesleyan University later this season.

Longer distances gave the Boilers more trouble. In the 800-meter dash, sophomore Michael Bermudez (2 minutes, 13.79 seconds) and freshman Lain Taylor (2 minutes, 14.81 seconds) finished near the middle of the pack at ninth and 11th place, respectively. In the 4 X 400 relay, Kewanee’s runners (Padilla, Crowe, Tyson Currie and Stabler) made sixth place (3 minutes, 49.74 seconds).

Kewanee’s other standouts occurred on the field. Senior Leocadio Gandarilla secured second place in shot put at 15.68 meters and will join Padilla at the state competition. Another senior, Dontaveon Thomas, found third place in the high jump (1.81 meters) and second place in the triple jump (12.67 meters).

Crowe also found his wings, soaring to sixth place in the high jump (1.76 meters) and fifth place in the long jump (6.02 meters). Stabler, close behind, snagged ninth place in the long jump (5.87 meters) out of 32 competitors.

Finally, senior Tyson Currie landed in seventh place in pole vault at 3.05 meters.

Like the boys team, the KHS girls team faced an uphill climb in the running events. Sophomore Jendayia Crowe finished the 400-meter dash in seventh place (1 minute, 5.29 seconds), and sophomore Nolie Charlet ended the 1600-meter race in eighth place (5 minutes, 51.61 seconds).

The Boiler Girls in the 4 X 800 relay team (senior Alejandra Martinez, Charlet, freshman Olivia Ralston and sophomore Kira Alsup) brought home team points and sixth place (11 minutes, 49.75 seconds).

The Boiler standout of the day came from senior Stardeja Jordan, who qualified for state with a first place finish in shot put (10.52 meters).

Sophomore Danielle Jo Currier sailed to fourth place in the long jump (4.64 meters) and eighth place in the triple jump (9.42 meters).

Lastly, senior Tejhiana Amos tied for eighth in the high jump (1.47 meters).
