Kewanee High School’s Key Club won first place in an international competition for a service award.

The award was presented earlier this month at the Key Club International convention in Orlando, Fla. Three Kewanee High School students — Charlotte Burkhart, Isabelle Vargas and Lillie Hampton, attended the convention.

The Kewanee chapter was recognized as the first place global winner for the Single Service Award. The award recognizes a club that has made a significant impact through one outstanding service project. Kewanee’s project was the Life Skills Prom.

The Kewanee club also won a third-place award for Major Emphasis. This past school year, the club’s theme was “Hands of Service: Helping Those in Need.”

KHS Key Club members Isabelle Vargas, Charlotte Burkhart and Lillie Hampton visited Disney World while in Orlando.

In applying for this award, the Kewanee Club included its work on the Good Fellows Christmas Basket drive and several fund-raisers that enabled the club to make donations to community organizations.

Kewanee was also recognized as one of only 10 distinguished clubs in Illinois and Eastern Iowa.

The three Kewanee club members met met Key Club members from all 50 states and countries all over the world. They attended various sessions and brought back new ideas for the local club.
