Kewanee High School hosted its 43rd Annual “Salute to America Night” at the boys basketball game Friday night.
The tradition began Jan. 30, 1981. The Iranian-held American hostages had been released and a celebration was organized by KHS to honor the national achievement.
As part of the festivities during that first evening, a large red, white and blue patriotic cake was created and served to everyone at the game.
The tradition continues and the cake was presented and served Friday night as well. At halftime everyone at the game received a piece of cake. Those in attendance also received a commemorative pen.
Kewanee High School faculty, staff, students also wished the VFW a happy birthday. The National VFW organization is 125 years old this year.
Locally, Kewanee VFW Post 8078 has been presenting the colors at all home varsity boys basketball games since 1981. It was noted that Kewanee High School is honored and humbled by the support of their students.
Those in attendance were then encouraged to stand (if able) to show their support of the VFW by giving them a round of applause.
“While it’s a small gesture of thanks, we want to show our support to our local VFW. We appreciate all they’ve done for the country, our community and school.”
