Kewanee High School’s freshman boys basketball team participated in the fresh-soph Warkins Tournament Saturday and Monday and went 1-2.

On Saturday the Boilers played a rough Riverdale sophomore squad and lost 48-25. “The overall pressure and aggressiveness got to the young Boilermakers, where they struggled with turnovers and missing a lot of shots,” Coach Trenton Terry said.

Leading scorer was Dane Vandevelde with 9, followed by Abe Diaz with 6.

In the second game Saturday the Boilers were able to take down Erie-Prophetstown’s freshman team just like the night before, 48-25.

“The team got off to an extremely hot start and shot the ball really well this game,” Terry said. Dane Vandevelde had his season high, 19 points, followed by Abe Diaz with 8 and Malaki Rodreguiez with 7.

The Boilers finished the tournament Monday night playing E-P once again, except the sophomore team this time. The Boilers lost 36-42 in the end, but “Their effort was there the majority of the game,” the coach said.

“The team had a lot of good looks and opportunities but couldn’t find a way to capitalize when it mattered most,” he said.

Leading scorer was Malaki Rodreguiez with 13 points (season high) followed by Dane Vandevelde with 8.

The Boilers moved to 4-3 overall on the young season and will play Bureau Valley today.
