The freshman Boilers faced off against St. Bede Wednesday night in Brockman Gym, where they were able to fight out a win, 38-36.
“The two words to describe the team win were ‘defensive toughness,’” Coach Trenton Terry said.
“We got out to a slow start, where we trailed 12-2 within just the first couple minutes of the game,” Terry said. “After a timeout to reset, we were able to slowly keep trailing toward a comeback.”
At halftime, the Boilers traided 19-27.
“I challenged the team that although our shots weren’t falling, our defensive effort should not be in question,” Terry said.
The team responded to this challenge, only allowing one point in the third quarter and nine total in the second half.
“We kept grinding it out until we got a small lead and were able to maintain it to the end with smart decision making,” Terry said.
Leading scorers for the team were Dane Vandevelde with 13 and Abe Diaz with 9.
On Monday the team will visit Bureau Valley to play the Storm for the third time this year.
