Welgat leads win over IVC

The Boilermakers varsity picked up an overtime win Tuesday at IVC in Chillicothe.

The Boilers won 56-54 in what Coach Dayton Ince called “A good fast-paced back and forth basketball game for four quarters.”

IVC led at the half 26-23 and the lead grew to as big as 13 with 2:55 on the clock in the fourth quarter. After a series of steals and made baskets, the Boilermakers trailed 48-45 with 14 seconds left and Colson Welgat made a three-pointer from the top of the key with five seconds.

That left IVC with a three-quarter-court heave for the win that missed. Welgat was the leading scorer with 19 points, 14 of them coming in the fourth quarter and overtime.

Catrelle Reed was next in line with 14 and Brayden Conley added 8.

Riveters fall to Grey Ghosts

Kewanee was led by Crish Crowe’s 19 points off the bench followed by 11 points from Isaiah Ince and Jesus Martinez with 8. The Riveters found themselves with a 13-point deficit at the half and battled back to within four points late in the game but just fell short.

The Riveters will travel again Friday to Hall for a rematch of Saturday’s loss to the Red Devils JV. Tip is in Spring Valley at 5:30 p.m.

KHS frosh fall to Geneseo

The freshman boys basketball team faced off against Geneseo, losing 53-44.

The two teams battled all the first half, going back and forth. The Boilers struggled to get stops defensively, specifically in the paint, ultimately trialing 26-25 at the half.

The second half began with much of the same, trading shots back and forth. The Boilers picked up five fouls during the third, sending Geneseo to the line various times and putting a couple of the Boilermakers bigs in foul trouble.

In the fourth quarter the Boilers struggled to knock down a shot against Geneseo’s 2-3 zone, something that hasn’t been a big problem for the team lately. “Poor shooting can happen at any point and we have to find a way to still have a productive offense when three-point shots aren’t falling,” Coach Trenton Terry said.

“It was a great, physical game for the most part and I thought we played hard against a well-disciplined team,” Terry said.

The team falls to 10-4 and will play their next game Friday against Hall.
