Freshmen boys lose tourney finale

The KHS freshman boys team fell to Mercer County 49-42 Monday in the consolation championship at the Erie-Prophetstown tournament.

Similar to the first game in the tournament, the Boilers struggled to make shots early, trailing at the half 14-15.

“The 1-2-2 press of Mercer Country definitely seemed to slow down the pace the team likes the play at,” Coach Trenton Terry said.

The team came out much better in the second half, Terry said, but so did Mercer County. The boilers trailed by six going into the fourth.

The team then went a strong effort in the fourth, trimming the deficit to just two points within the last minute. A couple of turnovers ultimately caused the team to have to foul until the buzzer.

The freshman team moves to 4-3 on the season, with their next game against Bureau Valley on Tuesday.
