KHS frosh 1-1 in tourney

Kewanee High School’s freshman boys basketball team played their first two games in the Erie-Prophetstown tournament Saturday, going 1-1 on the day.

The team lost the first game of the day to Orion sophomores, with a score of 30-42. The team struggled early on in the game, only scoring eight points in the first half. It was one of the slowest starts of a game for the team thus far.

The second half started out slow once again, but the team started to show some light in the fourth quarter, scoring 18 points.

“The effort was there late but time was not on our side by the end of it,” Coach Trenton Terry said. Leading scorer was Jaxon DeReu with 9 points.

The second game was played against Erie-Prophetstown, where the team turned it around and won 36-21. The team played hard from the jump, gaining a 23-14 lead at the half.

“The defense picked up the energy this game much earlier, which led to easy buckets on the offensive end,” Terry said.

DeReu again was the leading scorer, with eight points.

The Boilers will return Monday night for the last game of the tournament where they will be competing for the consolation championship.
