The Kewanee School District recently conducted a strategic plan goal-setting survey to gather parent and community feedback about district priorities and student experiences.
“The results reflect strong confidence in the district’s teaching staff, early learning programs, and student enthusiasm for reading and math,” Supt. Rebecca Baney said.
The school board identified early childhood literacy and numeracy as the district’s first priority for strategic planning. Survey participants gave feedback on the Board’s goals.
When asked which district goals were most important, families most frequently selected:
- Safe, modern and supportive facilities
- Self-regulation and social-emotional growth
“These goals emphasize creating safe, welcoming learning environments and supporting the social and emotional well-being of students,” Baney said.
Survey participants were asked a series of questions about literacy and numeracy. Most families rated the district as doing “very well” or “somewhat well” in helping young children develop early reading, writing, and math skills.
No respondents rated performance “not well,” indicating broad community satisfaction with foundational instruction.
Parents overwhelmingly agreed that their children enjoy reading, with the majority selecting Agree or Strongly Agree. Responses about math were also positive.
Parent comments revealed six common themes shaping early learning success:
— Teacher impact: Nearly 40 parents directly mentioned teachers as the most important factor in their child’s progress.
“My child’s teacher really helped them learn to read.”
— Preschool and early learning: Families praised district and community-based preschool programs as key to kindergarten readiness.
— Reading habits at home: Parents described bedtime stories and favorite books as central to their child’s love of reading.
— Practice and repetition: Many emphasized the importance of structure, homework, and daily review.
— Games and play-based learning: Over 20 families mentioned games — especially math games — as effective and fun ways to learn.
— Home–school connection: Families appreciated clear communication and homework that reinforced classroom learning.
Baney said the feedback will directly inform the district’s next strategic plan: “Our families’ voices confirm what we value most: strong relationships, engaging classrooms and a shared commitment to helping every child grow academically and emotionally. These insights will guide our next steps as we continue to ‘Inspire the Mind and Honor the Heart.’”
Baney also wished to acknowledge the participation of all the parents and guardians.
“Their input ensures that district goals reflect the needs and strengths of the entire Kewanee school community.”
