Hog Days Book Sale

The Friends of the Library will once again be hosting their annual Hog Days Book Sale Saturday, Aug. 31 from 7-11 a.m. at the Johnson’s Appliances parking lot. Stop by to buy some books and say hello to the staff volunteers who will be lending the Friends a hand this year.  In the event of rain, the sale will have to be canceled. 

Hog Days Mugs DIY – Aug. 20 from 3-6 p.m.

Get ready for the book sale by joining us for our Hog Days Mugs DIY where staff will show you how to use a Cricut machine to design your own mug.  Registration is required for this craft; call (309) 852-4505 or stop by at any library service desk to reserve a spot.  There are only five spots remaining so don’t wait.

Shrinky Dink Flip Flops – August 6, 2-3:30 p.m.

Why let the kids have all the fun?  Adults are invited to join their child to make Shrinky Dinky Flip Flop charms or create a design of their own.  

Heart Health with RaeAnn Tucker – Aug. 7 at 1:30 p.m.

RaeAnn Tucker from the Henry and Stark County Health Department will be at the library to give tips and tricks on how to keep your heart healthy.

Digital Skills Class – Aug. 7 at 4:30 p.m. 

The library has partnered with the Illinois Broadband Lab, Lead for America, and Americorps to bring free computer skill-building classes on Wednesdays. The available topics are Essential Computer Skills, which would be basic computer skills, Essential Software Skills, or office productivity skills, and Technology Tools in Daily Life, which will teach practical computer skills.

The last meeting of this class will be Aug. 7 from 4:30 to 6 p.m.  No registration is required to attend the classes; simply stop in. If you have any questions, please contact the instructor, Grace Clucas, at graceclucas@gmail.com or 309-678-2979.

Combatting Loneliness with Stephen Martell – Aug. 16, 1:30 p.m.

Did you know that loneliness can affect not just your mental health but also your physical health such as increasing your risk factors for heart disease and dementia? Or that loneliness has become such an endemic problem within the United States that nearly half of all adults experience feelings of loneliness daily? Loneliness may be affecting your life in ways that you don’t realize. 

Join Stephen Martell from the Henry and Stark County Health Department, who will be at the library to discuss what impact loneliness may be having on your life and how to overcome it using proven tips and tricks.

How to Get Started with eBooks – Aug. 28, 2 to 3 p.m.

Looking for a free way to read eBooks, listen to eAudiobooks, or even stream movies and TV shows?  Stop in, and library staff will show you how to do exactly that all with your library card. Don’t forget to bring your device with you, and receive help to get set up while you’re here.

KPLD 2024 Blood Drive

Want to make a difference in someone’s life? The library has teamed up with ImpactLife to host a blood drive at the library. Appointments are preferred, but walk-ins are welcome. If you have any questions, give the library a call at (309) 852-4505 or stop by and ask to talk to Cindy or Kit.

Youth Programming

Calling all homeschooling families! If you’ve got questions, need any advice, or just want to meet fellow homeschoolers, stop in Aug. 13 from 1 to 3 p.m. for Homeschooling Q & A with Gina Burmeier. She will be hosting a drawing and will have free giveaways for homeschooling families who stop by.  

Get ready for Coding with Andrew Manshiem. Middle schoolers are invited to attend this free session to learn the basics of computer coding. Check back with the library for more details as they work to get a specific time and date.

Don’t forget to stop in and get our Grab and Go craft of the month. This month the library will be handing out kits to make Corner Bookmark Characters. Stop in while supplies last.

Young Adult Programming

The library has an in-house craft planned for you on Aug. 9. Stop in either day between noon and 2 p.m. to make your own Alcohol Ink Washer Jewelry.  Back by popular demand, throughout August, stop in to pick up a Beaded Ocean Pen grab and go kit.

The library will also be holding two meetings of our Photography Club for Young Adults.  Join staff on Aug. 9 and 23 at 3:30 p.m. Cameras are supplied for class attendees.

Adult Book Club – Monday, Aug. 19 at 2 and 6 p.m.

The book club will be discussing The One Hundred Years of Lenni and Margot by Marianne Cronin. As always, they will hold two meetings; you’re invited to attend whichever time works the best for you. The library staff asks that anyone attending the evening meeting please enter the building through the elevator entrance located on the north side of the building on First Street. Copies of the book are available for checkout at the Information Services desk on the lower level.

Henry County Genealogical Society

As part of their monthly meetings, the Henry County Genealogical Society welcomes a variety of interesting presenters. The meetings are the fourth Monday of each month at 1:30 p.m. in the library’s Community Room. The next meeting is Aug. 26.  Tonya Fitzpatrick will be here to tell attendees “How Trauma Affects Mental Health and Substance Use.”
