A fundraising scam has the Kewanee Police Department warning residents not to be taken in. The scam involves unauthorized fundraising calls, according to a police news release.

On Tuesday, Oct. 21, the KPD received a report from a person in Herrin, Ill. who stated that they were contacted by someone claiming to be collecting donations for the KPD.

The caller reported told the person that they would receive an envelope in the mail that they could use to return their donation.

“This activity is not authorized by the Kewanee Police Department and is most likely a scam. The department does not make phone calls requesting donations under any circumstances,” the release said.

The local police department does send out official letters once a year to local businesses and select individuals to request support for community policing and outreach programs, especially ones that benefit children.

“These letters are printed on official department letterhead and clearly indicate that any donations should be mailed directly to the Kewanee Police Department, 401 E. Third Street, Kewanee, Illinois 61443,” the release said.

Police remind residents to exercise caution when receiving unsolicited phone calls or letters requesting money. Never provide personal or financial information over the phone to unverified individuals.

Anyone who receives a suspicious call or letter claiming to represent the KPD is encouraged to contact the department directly at 309-853-1911 to verify its legitimacy or to file a report.

“The Kewanee Police Department appreciates the continued support of our community and remains committed to transparency and protecting residents from fraudulent activity,” the release read.
