With temperatures expected to fall below zero in the coming days, the Henry County Office of Emergency Management is reminding residents that several local libraries are available as designated warming centers.

According to the agency, the Kewanee Public Library, Cambridge Library, Atkinson Library, Galva Library and the Geneseo Library are all open to anyone who needs a safe place to warm up during regular business hours. These sites provide heated indoor space for individuals and families seeking relief from the dangerous cold.

Residents can also use the State of Illinois warming center locator to find the nearest available site. The online tool lists public buildings across the state that serve as temporary warming locations during periods of extreme weather.

For those who need assistance outside of library hours or individuals with disabilities who may require additional support, the Henry County OEM can be reached at 309-937-3999.

Officials emphasize that warming centers play a critical role in preventing cold-related injuries and emergencies, particularly during prolonged stretches of subzero temperatures. They encourage anyone without adequate heat to take advantage of these resources and to check on neighbors, especially older adults or those who may be vulnerable.

As the cold snap settles in, health officials urge residents to stay informed, limit time outdoors and use warming centers whenever necessary to stay safe.
