Summer school is set to begin in the Kewanee School District, and school officials are pleased with the number of students who will be attending.

At Monday’s meeting, the Kewanee School Board learned that about 28 students per grade in kindergarten through third grade have signed up for summer school.

In all, 96 students in grades four through eight will be attending.

Numbers were also strong for the high school.

Also Monday, Kewanee High School Principal Amanda Tidwell said 142 seniors graduated last week. She said that included 32 students who had participated in the school’s career pathways program, which focuses on specific career areas they can pursue after high school graduation.

That career pathways number is up from just seven students last school year, Tidwell said.

Supt. Rebecca Baney reported that the new heating and air conditioning system for Petersen Auditorium is complete. And work has begun on applying the playing surface on the new tennis courts across Third Street from the school.

Before the meeting, there was a reception to honor five staff members who have received honors for their work. They are:

— Kindra Callahan, vocational agriculture teacher, who was named Teacher of the Year by the Illinois Association of Vocational Agriculture Teachers

— Rebecca Baney, whe received the Agriculture Education Advocacy Award from the Illinois Leadership Council for Agriculture Education District 1

— Amy Miler, recipient of the Illinois State Board of Education Award of Excellence

— Alicia Ralston, who received ISBE’s Award of Meritorious Service

— Tim Atwell, who is the Illinois Athletic Directors Association, Class 1A and 2A Director of the Year.
