The coveted, hand carved boot trophy made by DLH Woodworking

The Bishop Hill Old Settlers’ Association is announcing that its 29th annual 5K Swedish Stomp will be held on Saturday, April 25, with a breakfast beginning at 7:30 am.

The fee for breakfast only (breakfast casserole and drink) is $8 per person.

For the Stomp, which starts at 9 a.m., there is an early bird special for entry fees submitted by April 11 at a reduced rate of $25 for adult participants and $18 for those ages 7 through high school, with each participant receiving a T-shirt to commemorate the event. Any excess T-shirts will be available for purchase at the Colony Store.

On race day and beginning April 12, the fee for adults increases to $28, and to $20 for the younger group. Those 6 years old and under can enter the “Skamparoo” free of charge, but entrants will not receive a T-shirt.

The racecourse circles through historic Bishop Hill and into the hilly countryside around the town.

Joella Krause, the Association’s president, said the event averages between 40 and 60 runners, with some years recording 80 or more competitors.

Following the race, the participants will meet back at the Colony School for special refreshments and awards for the overall male and female winners, and those in specific age groups. The top runners receive the coveted, hand carved boot trophy made by DLH Woodworking

All proceeds will benefit the Association in its continued effort to restore and maintain the historic 1861 Colony School and its grounds.

According to Krause, the race has become a favorite activity, and runners come to the village from all over the state.

“The Old Settlers’ Association is the oldest, active organization in the village, fueled by volunteer effort,” said Krause.
