Galva’s Beta Sigma Phi sorority is hosting its 44th annual fall craft show on Saturday, Oct. 19. The event runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Galva High School gym.
Approximately 100 vendors participate, and arts and crafts of all kinds are available for sale. Holiday crafts are plentiful, with Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas décor topping the list.
Jewelry, doll clothes, ornaments, floral wreaths, wood crafts, pumpkins, knitted items, ceramics, garden art, baskets, and candles are just a few of the things on display.
“There is something for everyone,” said Michelle Cheline, of the Lambda Nu Chapter.
Cheline, along with Judy Anderson from XI Kappa Chapter, co-chair the event. Cheline also fills the role of treasurer.
“We are the largest craft show in the county and love showcasing the talented craftspeople that fill the aisles,” she said.
BBQ, ham sandwiches, as well as many desserts will be available for purchase in the school’s cafeteria. Admission remains at $2, and pets and strollers are not allowed.
As with last year, a tented area on the east side of the high school building will expand the craft show’s many offerings. The area protects from the weather and provides easy access for shoppers.
Each May, the sorority awards a $500 scholarship each to two graduating senior girls. They also support numerous local organizations such as Galva Freedom Fest, Galva Fire Department, Galva Schools, Galva Public Library, Galva Food Pantry, Galva Lions Club Empty Stocking Fund, Levitt Amp Music series, Galva Arts Council and the Christmas Love Tree.
“We use the craft show profits to help Galva. Giving back to the community is one of our main goals, and we’re proud of what we’ve accomplished over the years,” said Vicki Perkins, vice president of Chapter XI Kappa.
Perkins said that Beta Sigma Phi is an international women’s organization with a focus on social, cultural, and civic enrichment. Founded in 1931 in Abilene, Kansas, Beta Sigma Phi initially began as a reading society for women but has since evolved into a global sorority with chapters in the US, Canada, Asia, Europe, and the Caribbean.
It boasts more than 200,000 members worldwide who participate in philanthropic activities, social events, and educational programs, with a focus on creating a strong sisterhood and serving their communities.
Galva’s two chapters, Lambda Nu and XI Kappa Gamma currently total 31 members and each meets regularly throughout the year in the homes of members.
Vendor applications are sent out on April 15 of each year. Those interested in participating in the 2025 Craft Show are encouraged to contact the sorority at www.galvacraftshow.weebly.com.
“Once we close the doors on the 2024 Craft Show, we start planning for next year,” said Cheline. “It’s a team effort and considered a labor of love. We hope to keep it going for many years to come.”
