A dream years in the making has come true for veterinarian Kim Stevens. Her busy practice is now operating out of a brand-new clinic in Galva. Able to treat large and small animals, the 7,000 square foot building features holding/treatment pens for cattle, horses and other large animals as well as special rooms for cats, dogs and other small pets.

Stephens is quick to note that the previous practice, in downtown Galva, was just over 2,000 square feet. The new quarters more than triples the original building’s workspace and will enable her and her staff to operate more efficiently.

“With many veterinarians retiring or limiting their services to livestock producers, the practice is getting larger,” said Stevens. “The new haul-in pens for cattle and horses will allow a sick animal to be seen at the clinic, saving travel time for us and allowing the producer to have the animal attended to more quickly.”

An open house held on Friday, May 24 saw a host of visitors from Galva and surrounding towns tour the building, with door prizes and refreshments as part of the afternoon’s event. Staff showed off the large animal pens, the surgical suite, lab and X-ray rooms, small animal recovery room, dog holding pens, feline treatment area and cages for lost-and-yet-found animals.

“It takes more than a village,” said Stevens, who gave credit to the nearly 40 businesses that made the clinic possible. Of those, over half were from, or very near Galva. Stevens also praised Kenny Musselman of Musselman Construction who she said worked seven days a week to finish the building on time.

“His talent and work ethic are second to none,” she said adding the fact “that he built a fully functional, beautiful facility in just six months is incredible.”

Stevens, a graduate of the University of Illinois School of Veterinary Medicine, was the first in her class to purchase a clinic in less than three years. She has served the Galva and surrounding areas since the summer of 2010.

Stevens Veterinary Clinic, located at 2012 Hwy 5, serves both large and small animals. The building was recently constructed and includes state-of-the-art surgical and diagnostic equipment. In addition to her veterinary practice, she is the executive secretary and treasurer of the Mississippi Valley Veterinary Medical Association, and a Black Hawk College East Foundation board member. She is also active in the Grove Community Church.

She and her staff plan to serve the needs of the area’s animal population for years to come. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Stevens, call (309) 932-3434.
