A Kewanee man was arrested Monday on charges of animal cruelty, domestic battery and possession of methamphetamine, the Kewanee Police Department stated in a news release.

According to the release, on Nov. 11, officers were called to an apartment in the Lakeland Terrace complex for a suspected incident of animal cruelty. Officers met with the complainant, who provided police with video evidence of “disturbing acts of violence” by a resident of the apartments, Brandon Adams.

Video showed Adams grabbing an 8-week-old puppy by the throat, appearing to choke it, then handling it violently by its legs before dropping it to the floor.

Adams was also seen picking up the puppy by its head or neck and forcefully throwing it into a couch, the police news release stated.

Also on the video was footage of Adams assaulting his girlfriend earlier in the day. The video depicted Adams hitting, kicking and throwing the woman to the ground.

Upon investigation, officers discovered that Adams was also in possession of methamphetamine at the time of arrest.

Adams was taken into custody and eventually transported to the Henry County Jail.

On Tuesday, Nov. 12, the Henry County State’s Attorney’s Office formally charged Adams with animal cruelty, a Class A misdemeanor, domestic battery, a Class A misdemeanor and possession of methamphetamine, a Class 3 felony.

A Class 3 felony carries a potential of two to five years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

The news release states that while Adams has been charged, he is assumed innocent.

The KPD encourages anyone who suspects animal cruelty or domestic violence to report it by calling 9-1-1 or the non-emergency number at 309-853-1911.
