The City Council plans to discuss appointing an interim city manager during its meeting Monday.
Mayor Gary Moore said Wednesday that to this point, the council hasn’t discussed naming an interim successor to Gary Bradley.
Bradley, who had been Kewanee’s city manager for 10 years, has been “relieved of his duties,” according to a news release Moore issued to the media prior to the council’s Oct. 27 meeting.
On Wednesday, the mayor said the decision to replace Bradley was “definitely the consensus of the council.” He said Bradley was not dismissed for any wrongdoing, but that council members felt he was “headed in a direction that was not consistent” with the council’s plans for the city’s future.
Moore said he had been asked by citizens if the council had dug up any “dirt” on Bradley that led to his being replaced.
“There’s no dirt to be told, none at all,” the mayor said. “Gary Bradley has not taken a dime from the city” other than his salary.
The Kewanee Voice has tried unsuccessfully to reach Bradley for comment.
In the meantime, Moore, City Clerk Kasey Mitchell and other city employees have been doing the city manager’s job.
“I’m kind of playing double duty right at the moment,” the mayor said, adding that city staff has done a great job of handling all the tasks that need to be done.
The city will use the same consulting firm to guide the manager search as it has used for previous hires, Moore said.
