The City Council Monday gave the green light to an alley party to raise money for Kewanee’s police chief, who is battling cancer.

The council approved a request from Hype Inc., operators of the Tavern on Beach, to use the alley next to the tavern for a beer garden Friday evening.

John Cernovich of Hype Inc. told the council that people would be in the alley that runs east and west between West Prospect and Rockwell Streets starting at 7 p.m.

Everyone will be inside the tavern by 11, Cernovich said.

The event is part of a fundraiser for Chief Nicholas Welgat, who has been diagnosed with lung cancer. A softball tournament is also planned as part of the fundraising effort.

Also Monday:

— The council approved bids for two “unbuildable” lots in the Mill Creek subdivision.

The bids were $7,521 from Mark and Kathleen Slavens for the lot at 211 Regina Court, and $8,000 from Shane Kazubowski and Jason Burkiewicz for the lot at 231 Regina Court.

Both lots are adjacent to the bidders’ properties.

— A special use was approved for Ellie Sabella to operate a dog grooming business at 229 S. Park St.

Mayor Gary Moore said Ms. Sabella has operated that business on Rockwell Street with no problems.

— The council approved the sale of two ambulance cots for a total of $11,000 to another fire department. New cots cost $6,000 each.

Fire Chief Stephen Welgat said the cots came with two new ambulances the city recently purchased. They’re not needed because the fire department has purchased two more-advanced cots.
