The Kewanee Police Department is providing an update on its Child Passenger Safety Initiative, a community safety program launched in June of 2024.
The initiative was established to improve child passenger safety through education, outreach and access to properly fitted child safety seats, and has received strong support from local families and partner agencies.
Since its inception, the initiative has received strong community support and has made a measurable impact on local families. Through an Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) grant, the department was able to provide properly fitted child safety seats to 20 families who otherwise may not have had access to safe transportation options for their children.
“This effort has directly contributed to improved child passenger safety within the community,” Police Chief Stephen Kijanowski said.
“The department is also pleased to report professional development progress within the program,” Kijanowski said.
One of the department’s certified child passenger safety technicians (CPST) has been accepted as an instructor candidate with Safe Kids Worldwide. The long-term goal is to host a CPST certification course in Kewanee this fall.
“This would expand training opportunities for individuals who regularly work with children and families, including teachers, nurses, first responders, caseworkers, and healthcare staff,” Kijanowski said. Hybrid certification options are also available, consisting of online coursework with one in-person training day.
The Kewanee Police Department and Kewanee Fire Department have three certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians available to serve the community. These technicians provide car seat checks, general car seat safety education and new parent and child safety classes, as well as other child passenger safety–related outreach upon request.
