April is Child Abuse Prevention Month and in recognition of that, Braveheart Children’s Advocacy Center is preparing for a lineup of events aimed to raise awareness of the issue and support children and families affected by abuse.

The second annual Superhero 5k walk/run and kids’ fun run is scheduled for Saturday April 27. The run will be held at Baker Park and begin at 10 a.m. The kid’s fun run will start at 11 a.m.

Participants are encouraged to dress up as their favorite superheroes and join the fun run/walk, which will raise funds for Braveheart’s vital programs and services.

“We’re excited to bring the community together for our Superhero 5K, where everyone can be a hero for children in need,” said Jackie Diediker, executive director of the organization. “It’s a fun and meaningful way to show support for child abuse prevention and the healing journey of brave young survivors.”

In addition to the Superhero 5k, Braveheart will host a series of events throughout the month, including educational presentations with local schools, youth outreach programs, craft projects at local libraries, and a special virtual art event for World Art Day.

Members of the community can also show their support by wearing blue on Friday, April 5 for “Wear Blue Day for Child Abuse Prevention.” Use hashtag, #BraveheartCAC to post on social media.

“We want to engage the community in meaningful conversations about child abuse prevention and the importance of supporting survivors,” said Taylor Hager, the Multidisciplinary Team coordinator. “These events are an opportunity for everyone to learn, connect, and take action to protect our children.”

Braveheart staff said they are grateful for the support of local businesses, such as Parlor Coffee & Cream, CoCo’s Coffee Shop, Country Morning Coffee, The Daily Fix Nutrition, Kewanee Family Dentistry, and more who are offering special promotions, drinks, and advertising to raise awareness and support for Braveheart’s mission. Walmart is also offering round ups through online purchases where the change is donated to Braveheart.

“We are incredibly thankful for the support of our local business community, who are truly superheroes in their own right,” said Felisha Rogers, a family advocate at Braveheart. “Their generosity helps us continue our work to create a safer, healthier future for all children.”
