Boiler girls on a winning streak

The Kewanee High School Boiler Girls improved to 5-2 on the season with a 71-44 win over Galva.

Audrey Clucas scored 17 points all in first half and Bailey VanWinkle finished with 26.

The win was Kewanee’s fifth in a row.

Riveters start season 2-1

Kewanee High School’s sophomore basketball team is off to a 2-1 starts for the 2005-06 season.

In their first game of the season. the Riveters won scored a 10-point victory over the visiting Rockets from Rock Falls, 38-28.

Leading the Riveters was Manuel Arjon with 9 points. Damareon Thomas added 8 and Jaxon DeReu had 7 in the victory.

Mahomet-Seymour came to town on Nov. 28 and handed the Riveters their first loss of the early season with a final of 74-44. 

Alex Ramos scored a team-high 13 points followed by Jaxon DeReu with 9, Damareon Thomas with 7 and Jacob Coombes 6.

On Tuesday, the Riveters traveled to Dixon High School to take on the Dukes and came out on top with a final of 52 -31. 

Alex Ramos again led the Riveters with 15 points. Noah Barreto and Kane Minton each added 8. Jaxon DeReu and Jacob Coombes had 6 points each in the Riveters’ second win of the season. 

The Riveters take their 2-1 record on the road this weekend, starting with a conference opener at Erie-Prophetstown.

On Saturday in Spring Valley, the Riveters will compete in the JV portion of the Colmone Holiday Classic, where they will play Fieldcrest at 4:30 p.m. and Galva at 7 p.m.

Freshmen suffer their first loss

The Kewanee freshman got their first loss of the early season to La Salle-Peru in a dogfight of a game, 33-31.

The team struggled early on losing the first quarter 11-4. But their energy picked up in the second quarter and led at halftime, 15-14. 

“The second half consisted of a lot of back and forth between both teams,” Coach Trenton Terry said. 

Kyden Jones hit two big threes during this time, one being at the buzzer heading into the fourth quarter, and the next being the game-tying 3 with 10 seconds remaining. 

LP was able to control the ball with the remaining seconds and hit a game-winning shot at the end.

Leading scorers for the Boilers were Kyden Jones with 11 and Dane Vandevelde with 8. They fall to 2-1 on the season.

Their next game is Friday against their first conference opponent, Erie-Prophetstown.
