The American Legion Post 31 hasn’t outgrown their space; instead, their space has outgrown them.

A for sale sign recently went up on Railroad Avenue. The American Legion building, which has been the place for many parties, wedding receptions, community and veteran-related events throughout the years, is up for grabs.

Jerry Thompson, finance officer for the American Legion, said the 10,000 square foot building is just too large for the legion’s dwindling numbers.

“We don’t have the membership,” he said. “When it started, we had 450 members, but we’re down to 180.”

The building would make a perfect venue to host parties and weddings, Thompson said.

The first floor is 5,000 square feet and the upper floor is another 5,000. In addition, the building has a bar, a banquet room and a small kitchen that could be updated. The building has heat and central air and features a large parking lot that could be attractive to the right buyer wanting to purchase it for a party or special event venue.

With their building up for sale, Post 31 is eyeing the move downtown. Thompson said the plan is to move operations to the building currently occupied by End Zone. That space, which is two buildings located at 116 and 118 East Third St., has more than enough room, with a club room for members to meet as well as a small room they could rent out.

The one issue, Thompson said, is that there won’t be enough room for Memorial and Veterans day services that need to be brought indoors when the weather is bad. But that problem has already been solved.

Thompson said the American Legion has already reached an agreement with the Flemish American Club to use their space for that purpose.

Real estate agent Jodi Looney, with Arrow Real Estate, has the listing for the American Legion building, located at 1509 Railroad Ave. The building is listed for sale at $349,900.
