Night two of the Wally Keller Invitational is in the books. 

Each of the first two games went down to the wire, with Annawan edging out Bureau Valley 51-49 and Elmwood topping Stark County 40-39. In the nightcap, Wethersfield thumped Putnam County, 73-31. 

Game 1

The match up between Annawan and Bureau Valley was close throughout the game. The Braves held a slim 15-13 lead after one frame and were winning 27-24 at the half. 

Brady Heitzler scored seven of Annawan’s 15 first quarter points and Corban Chhim scored 11 of BV’s 13 points. The Storm outscored the Braves 15-9 in the third quarter and held a 39-36 lead heading into the final frame.

Landon Hulsing and Blake Erickson each scored five for BV in the third quarter and Gabe Sims scored four of nine Annawan points. The Braves flipped the script in the fourth quarter and outscored the Storm 15-10 and pulled ahead for the 51-49 win. 

Sims led all scorers with 22 points and Heitzler chipped in with 10. Chhim topped Bureau Valley with 20 points and Hulsing added 13. 

Game 2

In another close game, Elmwood was ahead 10-7 after the first quarter, but Stark County led 24-23 at the break. 

Seven Stark County players scored in the second quarter as the Rebels outscored Elmwood 17-13. 

Both teams struggled to put points on the board in the third quarter, but Elmwood topped Stark County 8-7 and the game was tied 31-all after three.

Jackson Magee scored six of Elmwood’s 10 fourth quarter points as Elmwood edged out Stark County 40-39. 

Game 3

The Flying Geese came in hot Tuesday night, outscoring Putnam County 22-4 in the first quarter. Leading the way for Wethersfield was senior Landon Sauer with 11 points. 

PC recovered by outscoring the Geese 16-10 in the second quarter, but Wethersfield’s lead was now 32-20 at the break. 

Senior Colin Hornback helped the Wethersfield cause by hitting his third three-pointer of the first half. Hornback had six of Wethersfield’s 10 second quarter points. 

Putnam County’s Owen Saepharn scored the entirety of his team-high eight points in the second quarter. 

The Geese came out after the break and had another 22-point effort. The Wethersfield lead ballooned to 54-28 after three quarters of play. Sauer added seven more points and senior Dillon Horrie contributed five. 

In the final quarter, four Wethersfield players (Sauer, Kellan Keane, Irvin Landwehr and Nathan Oliver) each hit treys to account for 12 of the teams’ 19 third quarter points. 

Sauer scored a game-high 25 points and he made five of six free throw attempts. Hornback contributed 12 and Horrie and Zeb Rashid added 10 apiece.
