The director of development for Abilities Plus, Lauren Dynes-Gillespie, has been terminated for comments she made on social media, according to a news release from the agency.

In a statement from Abilities Plus Executive Director Kim Walker, Walker said that the agency was made aware of the social media content shared by one of their employees that reflected her “personal beliefs and opinions.”

Abilities Plus did not release the name of the employee but said the employee’s views were not representative of Abilities Plus and were inconsistent with the agency’s mission and values.

But The Kewanee Voice learned that Dynes-Gillespie was terminated after an internal review.

On the social media platform X, Dynes-Gillespie reportedly made comments that were then amplified by another account and shared over 270,000 times. The X account, I Meme Therefore I Am, posted about Dynes-Gillespie’s comments on Jan. 21 and directed their followers to contact Abilities Plus and make their opinions known, writing, “People with such extreme views should have no business working for an organization dedicated to helping others’ wellbeing.” The account then provided a phone number for Abilities Plus.

In the statement, Abilities Plus said, “We want to be clear that Abilities Plus does not support or endorse the content shared. Our organization remains committed to creating a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all individuals we serve, their families, and our community partners.”

***Copy was edited to clarify that while Abilities Plus did not release the name of the employee, The Kewanee Voice confirmed the employee’s name through multiple sources.
