Frosh top Bureau Valley
The freshman team played their fourth game in four days against BV and got off to a much better offensive start, winning the first half 26-21.
The team came out strong once again in the second half, applying a lot of pressure and forcing a lot of turnovers led by Jacob Coombes and Jaxon DeReu.
They gave up only giving up five points in the third quarter and led by 17 going into the fourth.
“The team finished the game out strong with several different players ending out the game,” Coach Trenton Terry said.
Leading scorer was DeRue with 10, followed by Damareon Thomas with nine.
Two tourney wins for sophomore team
Kewanee’s sophomores stole the first game versus LaSalle-Peru 46-45 with a heady defensive steal by Adeil Arjun with four seconds left. That steal resulted in a great pass and lay up with one second left by Dayvon Robinson to seal the first victory of the day.
The Riveters were led by freshman Cris Crowe’s 11 points and followed by 10 each for Jesus Martinez and Josh Dewante.
The second game was a solid 10-point win, 52-42, over a very good IVC squad. Game-high points were from Chris Crowe with 15, supported by 10 from Adiel Arjon and five other Riveters scoring in the ball game.
After going 2-0 in pool play, the Riveters will match up with Mendota Friday at 6:30 p.m. in a quarterfinal game where the winner will compete Saturday at 10:30 a.m. for the championship.
Welgat leads KHS over OVC
A big evening by senior Colson Welgat led the varsity to the win.
The Boilers got out to a quick first-quarter lead, 16-10, and led at the half 35-27 with Welgat leading the charge with 22 points in the first half and five threes in the second quarter.
IVC came out strong in the third quarter poised to make a run, but the Boilermakers battled and were able to maintain a seven-point lead heading into the fourth, 42-35.
“Similar to the rest of the game the fourth quarter was more back and forth action,” Coach Dayton Ince said. The Boilermakers held on to the lead down the stretch with solid execution and free throw shooting to put the game away, 56-52
Welgat led with 26 points and Catrelle Reed added 17 (13 coming in the second half.)
