Ameren Corporation recently announced that Patrick Smith assumed the role of president of Ameren Illinois beginning Jan. 1. Smith’s appointment marks a significant milestone in a career that began in the field and evolved into executive leadership through perseverance, curiosity and a deep commitment to service.
Smith’s connection to the utility industry began in childhood. Growing up in East St. Louis, he recalls a moment that planted the seed for his future career.
“Years ago, after a power outage, I looked out the kitchen window and saw a Union Electric crew restoring power,” Smith said. “It was novel for me and very interesting to see.”
That early fascination eventually led him to a job as a meter reader and then to an apprenticeship as a lineman — a role that would shape his understanding of the industry from the ground up.
His apprenticeship, completed in just 42 months instead of the standard 48, was both mentally and physically demanding. Smith trained on overhead and underground distribution systems and gained experience in transmission and substation work. He
later spent 3.5 years as a journey line worker, rotating through roles as a crew member, crew leader and first responder. His first storm response outside Illinois took him to Indiana, where he learned to rely on the experience and guidance of those around him.
Transitioning into leadership wasn’t something Smith initially sought, but his passion for coaching youth sports helped shape his approach.
“I see leadership in the industry not measurably different than coaching a sports team,” he said. “If I could lead in that fashion, I knew I would enjoy being a leader with our company.”
His first leadership role came in 1995, and while the transition was met with some skepticism, Smith focused on excellence and earned the respect of his peers.
Now, as he prepares to lead Ameren Illinois, Smith brings a unique perspective shaped by his time in the field.
“What resonates the most is that I understand their journey, I understand their grind,” he said of the line workers he now oversees. “So, while I don’t lead with that part of my experience, it usually comes up and our shared experiences fuel an eased conversation.”
Under Smith’s leadership, Ameren Illinois continues to innovate and excel. The company serves 1.2 million electric and over 800,000 natural gas customers, operates 12 underground gas storage fields, and has earned national recognition for its storm restoration and gas leak detection technologies.
In July 2023, Ameren Illinois received the EEI Storm Recovery Award, and in 2024, the American Gas Association honored the company with its Research and Innovation Award.
