In a joint news release, the First Christian Church, the Kewanee Salvation Army, the Rotary Club and the Kewanee Park District announced that they would combine their efforts to offer a free day at the pool, along with back-to-school backpacks, supplies and clothing.
The free swim/backpack day will take place at the Oasis swimming pool at Northeast Park on Saturday, July 27.
The Rotary Club will continue its tradition of offering a free community swim at the pool from noon until 6 p.m. The maximum capacity for the pool is 300 people, and the pool staff will manage that capacity throughout the day.
The First Christian Church will be onsite with a Back-To-School Backpack distribution from noon until 2 p.m. or while supplies last. Backpacks will be provided for school-aged children on a first-come, first-serve basis. The backpacks will contain supplies students will need for the upcoming school year, and are sponsored by the church, the Salvation Army and the Rotary Club.
The First Christian Church will also hold a clothing distribution from noon until 2 p.m., and the clothing is free to individuals in need.
“The Rotary Club of Kewanee, Salvation Army, and the First Christian Church would like to thank the Kewanee Park District for their partnership in holding this joint event,” the news release stated.
“The Salvation Army of Kewanee is community focused ‘doing the most good’ in our area. The First Christian Church in Kewanee is a place where we strive to love God, love others, follow Jesus, and make Jesus known.” Its ministry encompasses the community and beyond.
The Rotary Club of Kewanee promotes “service above self” with projects and donations to the community totaling over $50,000 of benefits.
